Choosing a college basketball program means finding a school that aligns with a student-athlete’s goals, both on the court and in the classroom.

On Monday, Oct. 19, at 8 p.m. ET, YD3 will host a free live webinar featuring four coaches who played at the Division III level and have since built careers in college basketball and the NBA. The panel will offer insight into evaluating programs, understanding a coach’s expectations and navigating the recruiting process.

Every recruiting journey looks different. These panelists bring firsthand experience as former D3 student-athletes to a conversation about identifying talent, supporting player development and assisting with the transition to college basketball. Sign up below for our free webinar on Monday, Oct. 19, at 8 p.m. ET, and explore the bios below to get to know the coaches joining the discussion.

Pat Juckem, head coach, Washington University in St. Louis: Juckem was a four-year letterman at Lawrence University, graduating in 1995 before beginning his coaching career at his alma mater. He later became head coach at Coe College and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, leading the Titans to the 2018 D3 championship game. Since taking over at WashU the following season, Juckem has guided the Bears to multiple NCAA tournament runs, including the 2025 Final Four and last year’s Sweet 16.

Marcus Kahn, head coach, University of Mary Washington: After graduating from the University of Redlands in 1997, Kahn began his coaching career at Pitt-Greensburg. He then spent six years at Cabrini, compiling a 153-27 record, winning five straight conference titles and taking the Cavaliers to the 2012 D3 title game. Kahn became Mary Washington’s head coach in 2014 and led the Eagles to their first national championship last season, finishing 30-3.

Dan Bisaccio, assistant coach, Miami Heat: Bisaccio began as a student-athlete at Clarkson University before transferring to Emerson College, where he played during the 2011-12 campaign and earned a degree in broadcast journalism. He continued his basketball arc at Marquette, spending two years as a graduate assistant and video coordinator before leaving for Miami in 2014 to join the Heat as a video intern. Bisaccio worked his way through the organization’s video and player development departments and, in 2024, became head coach of the Sioux Falls Skyforce, Miami’s G League affiliate. He’s since returned to the Heat as an assistant coach.

Jonathan Safir, assistant coach, University of Florida: Safir played four seasons at Vassar College, helping the Brewers win 19 games and tally their first-ever conference tournament title game appearance in 2013-14. After earning a degree in American studies, he earned a master’s in sports management at Columbia, where he began his coaching trajectory under Kyle Smith, a fellow Division III alum now head coach at Stanford. Safir accompanied Smith to San Francisco before joining Florida in 2022 as director of basketball strategy and analytics. Following the Gators’ 2025 national title run, he was promoted to assistant coach.

I think many recruits get frustrated when they can’t earn a Division I scholarship and don’t take D3 seriously or appreciate the opportunity it offers.

I was nowhere near a Division I basketball player, and I fully understood that. D3 basketball is a very high level, and it gave me the chance to keep playing college basketball, make some of my fondest memories, and make some of my best friends. It’s a privilege, and I highly recommend it to young student-athletes who have the opportunity.

Drawing on their varied basketball perspectives, the panelists will discuss how coaches assess both recruits and roster roles. The conversation will also explore player development, academic demands and the relationships that shape a student-athlete’s time in college.

For parents, the discussion will offer insight into a coach’s vision for their child and help them determine whether a program aligns with their long-term goals.
