Division III athletics can offer value far beyond competition. From working alongside teammates to taking on responsibilities across campus, the college experience can offer student-athletes opportunities to build skills that carry into life after sport. The NCAA’s latest D3 facts-and-figures overview offers a closer look at that connection.

NCAA Data Highlights Student-Athlete Involvement Beyond Sports

In the NCAA’s release published this month, 63% of former D3 student-athletes reported holding leadership positions in campus clubs or organizations, compared with 38% of those who didn’t participate in college athletics. The analysis stems from a 2020 NCAA-Gallup study.

That aligns with Division III’s philosophy of integrating athletics into the overall collegiate experience. The NCAA emphasizes D3’s commitment to academic achievement, athletic participation and personal development as complementary pieces.

Sports can also equip individuals with core competencies that employers value. In June, the NCAA shared findings from its Growth, Opportunities, Aspirations and Learning of Students in College (GOALS) study. More than 90% of student-athletes said their time in athletics positively affected their work ethic and responsibility. Over 80% cited leadership, time management and adaptability among the habits they developed on the playing field.

These results align with broader workplace expectations. A recent study from the National Association of Colleges and Employers identified communication, teamwork, professionalism and critical thinking among the traits employers seek in new graduates. It found that students’ self-reported competency ratings increased throughout college, though it didn’t isolate the effects of athletics.

For D3 student-athletes, team commitments and campus involvement can provide opportunities to practice these skills in different settings. Whether coordinating a campus event, contributing to a group project or balancing academic deadlines, those moments can help prepare students for responsibilities beyond college.
