Men’s Football

D3 football rewards the habits that rarely make the highlight reel. The protection that buys a quarterback another second. The defensive stop that flips field position. The teammate who does his job so someone else can make the play.

UW-River Falls put that principle on display last season. The Falcons overcame a 14-3 deficit, scored 21 unanswered points, and defeated North Central, 24-14, to claim its first national championship in program history. Kaleb Blaha capped the season with 6,189 total scrimmage yards, an NCAA record across all divisions, while the Falcons’ high-tempo “Top Gun” offense and “Palm Up” philosophy helped define a team that finished 14-1.

For North Central, the 2025 season represented another trip to familiar territory. The Cardinals reached the Stagg Bowl for a sixth consecutive year and finished 14-1, adding another championship-game appearance to a stretch that includes national titles in 2019, 2022, and 2024.

The work isn’t finished when the pads come off. The 2025 Division III Football Academic All-America teams featured 51 student-athletes who combined to average a 3.82 GPA, including seven with perfect 4.00s. The 25 first-team selections averaged a 3.85 GPA, placing academic achievement alongside the rigors of a full football season.

That balance laid the groundwork for former Mount Union wide receiver Nick Sirianni, who earned All-Ohio Athletic Conference honors and helped the Purple Raiders win three national championships before entering the coaching profession in 2004. He eventually reached the NFL, where he became head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles and led the franchise to a Super Bowl title.

The Division III path may lead to another football field. For others, it may lead somewhere entirely different. What’s your frame of mind as you cross the goal line?
